Everybody's Special

Everybody's special. Do you agree with me?

If you can't spell, or if you are mathematically challenged do you consider yourself dumb?  Well think again, there must be something you can do better than somebody else does. Say for example one friend of mine who is like a walking calculator and who always excel in math and won every quiz bee he had attended BUT has a very hard time associating with people. Or this other friend of mine who's average in college and flanked a few subjects BUT is now a very successful salesman.

According to Dr. Howard Gardner there are 9 kinds of Intelligence. Which explains why there are certain things we are very good at and some we are just "so-so".

Source

Here are the 9 Kinds of Intelligence.I got from here and here. See for yourself where you belong.

1. Linguistic Intelligence (Word Smart)
Reflects the ability to read, write, tell stories, and learn languages, grammar, and syntax.  Evident in most poets, journalists, and public speakers.
2. Logical-mathematical intelligence. (Number/ Reasoning Smart).
The ability to calculate, quantify, consider propositions and hypotheses, and carry out complete mathematical operations. It enables us to perceive relationships and connections and to use abstract, symbolic thought; sequential reasoning skills; and inductive and deductive thinking patterns.
This is a bit me, though I hate Math but I always get high grades during my school days and I definitely have a good reasoning skill and I love watching suspense/ detective movies and TV series and I often get the outcome.
3. Musical Intelligence. (Musical Smart)
Sensitive to sounds, tones, rhythms, pitch, musical keys, and structure of the songs (from verse and chorus to symphonies).
Oh, this is hubby. He can play almost all instruments and can play a song with the guitar or piano by just listening to the melody of the song.
4. Spatial Intelligence. (Picture Smart)
The ability to imagine, understand, and represent the visual-spatial world. They may have a good sense of direction, hand-eye coordination, and visual memory.
5. Bodily-kinesthetic Intelligence. (Body Smart)
The capacity to manipulate objects and use a variety of physical skills.  This intelligence also involves a sense of timing and the perfection of skills through mind–body union.  Athletes, dancers, surgeons, and craftspeople exhibit well-developed bodily kinesthetic intelligence.
6.  Interpersonal intelligence. (People Smart)
The ability to understand and interact effectively with others.  It involves effective verbal and nonverbal communication, the ability to note distinctions among others, sensitivity to the moods and temperaments of others, and the ability to entertain multiple perspectives.  Teachers, social workers, actors, and politicians all exhibit interpersonal intelligence.
This is kind of a little bit of me too.
7. Intrapersonal intelligence. (Self Smart)
The ability to be self-aware and explore emotions, goals and motivations. This perspective on the human condition is used by writers, philosophers, psychologists, and theologians. To improve your intrapersonal intelligence, “know thyself”—write in a journal, meditate, try the personality tests mentioned above.
8. Naturalistic Intelligence. (Nature Smart)
Individuals with green thumbs and “horse whisperers” have naturalistic intelligence. They are sensitive to nature and may easily recognize and classify species. T
9. Existential Intelligence.
The ability to explore questions about life, death, and what lies beyond the subjective perspective.
Knowing this, made me understand each individual more and confirmed that indeed everybody is special.

As a mom, I find it important to recognize where my child excels so I can appreciate her more and support her to further enhance her skills. Or, I can help her improve and strengthen where her weakness is to improve her whole well being.

What field of intelligence do you most likely belong guys? and which field do you need to improve more?

Have a nice day Brainiacs....

What Hit Me

It's been too long since my last post and I've been wanting to blog so I can vent out all the emotional baggage I had for the past 2 weeks almost.

Wow, it has only been 2 weeks but it felt like the longest time of anticipation and anxiety.

2 Sundays ago, Sophia had a high fever around 39C, I know that fever is caused by infection and when I saw her swollen gums I was sure that she was just teething and the last 4 molars erupting is causing the fever.

Monday and Tuesday she was so weak and no Paracetamol helped lower the fever. She just wants me to hug her all the time and complained that her limbs and joints hurt. Her eyes are bit swollen, I think from crying and being so whiny all the time. She must be really tired because all she wants to do is sleep. When she woke up, she's complaining that her eyes stings and hurt. Her lips are cracked. Again, due to High Fever.

Wednesday. She was a bit energetic, and already asked for food. Temperature still the same. Eyes more puffed, Gums are generally really swollen. But in my assessment she was getting better because appetite is back and she's in her usual playful self. So I went to work expecting her to be better when I come home. That night, although fever has become 38C but her eyes are really puffed more puffed before I left her this morning.  I was getting worried. Really worried.

Thursday. Hubby and I took her for dengue test complying her Pedia's request. I was sure she's free from Dengue and it's something else.

The dengue test came in POSITIVE. And what's more is that the test showed she already had Dengue prior to this. WHEN? I don't know. It was really horrifying for me. I was fighting with my subconscious the whole time blaming myself. Hubby didn't bring it up, but I was ashamed of myself for being so lax, he was insisting of having lab works for Sophia but I constantly brush the idea away because I was sure it was only teething. And the main reason I didn't agree, because I don't want to subject my dear daughter to such painful needleworks when I know she's only teething. IS SHE?....  How can I be stupid and so close minded.

DENGUE?!? Where did she get it? Maybe from our out of town trips the couple of weeks. Maybe from school. Maybe from home?...  I was in such denial and look what happened to her. I feel my intestine twisting inside me, makes me wanna vomit from all this mix emotions. I couldn't cry but I sure wanted to. I just said a silent prayer to God to give me and hubby strength and more to protect Sophia and keep her away from danger. I cradle her, kissed and hug her saying how sorry I am for misjudging and asking her to be strong.

She was hospitalized for 4 days. It was the longest 4 days of my life. I don't know how many hours I've slept, I was awake most of the time not wanting to take my eyes of her. She had blood extraction 2x a day because we had to monitor her platelets, some extraction wasn't really very pleasant the kind that makes you wanna slap the medtech's face but I know it's not really their fault, the lowest she had was 81,000 and when that result was relayed to us. That's the time I can't control myself from sobbing. I don't remember myself being that scared.

Now, she is well. Lost few pounds, but I couldn't be more happier now that she's ok. I bought lots of off lotions already. I've researched about dengue and mosquito, and how to keep them away from my loved ones.

I thank God for keeping Sophia safe. I thank God for my family, my mom, dad and 2 brothers for being there to support us 100% all the time. My aunts and cousins and to my dear friends who loves Sophia so much. Without them, I know I shattered to pieces. Thank you again for the encouragement and for keeping me sane during those moments.

What happened to Sophia, I wouldn't wish it for anyone and for any mother . Let's all be safe and healthy.

Fear Not. Child's Dental Visit

She enjoys Oral Prophylaxis a lot

To have a child patient is already exhausting, to have a child patient who is scared of you is so much frustrating. I have to face that everyday. And everyday I see parent's anxiety build up when 15 minutes is up and the child still won't open her/his mouth for examination. And then there goes the bribing.... candies, icecream, toys to take me here take me there...

So why are your kids scared of dentist? Because maybe you parents are too

Maybe it's time to overcome those fear and face it so you won't be able to pass that same fear to your children. Parents should be their children's role Model. They must be able to look up to you as good example. So, you should brush regularly, visit the dentist at least twice a year, control your dental anxiety and sport a healthy set of teeth too.

Never ever try to use dentists, and our works as threats for punishments to naughty or misbehaving children. Pls thats a No. No. Children fear the unknown and if you associate dentist as somebody to be feared then most likely, your kids are going to.

My VIP patient. Sophia

Prevention is always better than cure. Don't take your children to the dentist only with an aching tooth. For sure their first dental visit will be unpleasant and future dental visit will be non existent.
Teach your children to brush their teeth every after meal. So they will get used to the feeling of a clean mouth. We teach our children to wash their hands/wash their face until it becomes a habit. Same thing should happen with tooth brushing.

Your child's first dental visit should be around his/her first birthday. More than examining the child's mouth, this visit is more on preventive measures, the visit will provide the dentist opportunity to educate the parents and caregivers about dental habits to avoid potential dental problems and focus on a preventive approach.

Fearless Patient

If you want to raise a child with a bright and healthy smile for the rest of his/her life then make them visit their dentist regularly.

Happy Brushing!

Sophie's Style: Toothbrushing Sophie Style

Father, Mother, Brother Sister...How do you brush your teeth?

One of my greatest fear is treating my own family with tooth problems, because they shouldn't have any in the first place. If any of them does, it's going to be a slap on my face, I treat other people's tooth problems so I shouldn't neglect my own familys health right? Luckily for us, Sophia brushing her teeth came naturally for her.

When I gave birth to Sophia, she already has 2 incisors (front teeth) which finally came out a few weeks later. But Little S started brushing as soon as the new two incisors appeared, that's like when she was 5 months old, it was me who did the brushing at first of course. When she was 8 months old that's the time she started brushing on her own.

Last Christmas I bought her a new toothbrush from firefly. And she really loves it. Now, she's the one to remind us that it's already brushing time. Perfect! diba?

I already have the makings of an independent child.  :)

Here are a few reminders:

  • never neglect your babies temporary teeth, they are as important as the permanent.
  • around 5 - 7 years old, the first permanent molars erupt. Never think that it's still temporary because it didn't replace any temporary tooth. That's because they really don't. They just erupt without replacing any tooth.
  • As always prevention is better than cure. Brush your children's teeth every after meal. As soon as they have teeth they can already visit their dentist.
  • Make their first dental visit non-traumatic, meaning don't just see the dentist when your already in pain. See your dentist twice a year.
Sophie turning the light on
The cool brush is very effective on children. Why? because it has  cool designs, it has a LED light that blinks for one minute ( the duration of  how long your child should brush) 1 minute for the upper teeth and one minute for the lower teeth. But most importantly they have soft bristles meaning easy on the gums and enamel.

As soon as the lights stop blinking, Sophie wouldn't stop brushing still. She would just turn the light back on and brush again and keeps looking at the mirror while she brush and exclaims her non stop "WOW"

Here's Sophie and her beloved Firefly Hello Kitty design Toothbrush.

So inlove with the blinking lights

Sore Eyes... Please go away!!!

Thankfully Sophia’s eyes are getting better now… No more sore eyes, the culprit of our “so-so week” last week.
Unfortunately my eyes are not…
Piskat Piskot Piskat!
The other day, I went home from work with a bad headache, I thought it was just part of PMS. But when I woke up yesterday having a hard time opening my left eye. Because my eyelids were stuck together with watery discharges, I knew I have SORE EYES, piskat in Bisaya, Conjunctivitis in medical term, that means swelling of the thin covering of the eyeball and inner eyelid. True enough, when I check myself in the mirror, I see myself ready for trick or treating… Swollen, red, burning and painful eyes.
Like all mothers, I prayed to God to take away the virus from Sophia and to give it to me instead. Because I can endure it better. That prayer was answered and I now have an infected left eye. throat and lymph glands are sore as well. It feels like something sharp is poking my ear.
My realization, “be careful what you wish for, it might just come true”. Lol
And because I’m already infected all I can do is treat it. Prevent it from infecting hubby and the rest of the family and prevent Sophia from re-infection.
The only thing I can do to take vengeance to this highly contagious viral infection is to blog about it and hopefully this post will be of help to anyone who’d stumble on this post.
HOW TO GET IT
·         Spreads by eye to hand to eye contact
·         Runny nose or cough
·         Or when people come in contact w/ a contaminated object.
PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE
·         The best and the cheapest way there is, and the most neglected way is by washing your hands frequently and thoroughly w/ soap and water.
·         Never rub your eyes with a dirty hand.
·         No sharing of towels, sunglasses, make up or anything that may lead to transfer of infection
·         Disinfect common surfaces with diluted bleach solutions: door knobs, counter, etc.
TREATMENT:
·         Seek medical attention. See your Optometrist or Opthalmologist.
·         Apply warm compress to your eyes for 5-10 mins 3 times a day to relieve discomfort.
